What does physical therapy typically look like?
All care will be provided one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. You can expect full support throughout the process, and the care plan can be continually adjusted to best meet your needs.
Step 1: Thorough Evaluation
We will listen to your full story and then do a complete physical and movement evaluation. The specific components of this will vary based on why you are coming in, but we feel that this is the most vital part of the process. Trying to find the root cause of your concern and assessing your baseline status will make everything down the road go more smoothly. Even if you have the newest and fanciest treatment techniques in the world, they must be used appropriately and with purpose to get the best results.
Step 2: Individualized Treatment
This will vary widely based on your preferences, needs, and what we find in your evaluation. Often more hands-on techniques such as manual therapy or dry needling can help initially in breaking the cycle of pain or dysfunction, closely followed by restoring proper movement patterns, building strength, and gaining flexibility in a more active way. Direct treatment is always complemented with education on your condition and lifestyle strategies to support your physical therapy sessions. With this approach, we are trying to make sure that your original pain or dysfunction stays away for good! During this stage, you will likely have some “homework” between sessions and will follow up with formal physical therapy visits an average of once per week to make sure progress is continuing and any hands-on care or specific feedback is being provided.
Step 3: Transition to Independence
The final step is to make sure that you feel empowered to continue maintaining or progressing independently. Our goal is to work ourselves out of a job by giving you the tools to take charge of your own health! For physical therapy care, you shouldn’t have to go to a clinic 2-3 times per week indefinitely to see results. Ideally, we can taper the frequency of your sessions as you improve or just continue with check-in appointments as needed. Of course, if you love having some extra motivation and a place to come work out, we can always discuss transitioning to regular Pilates or wellness visits instead.
